dandelion facts and benefitsFor years I have been trying to eliminate the dandelion from my yard.
Although the little yellow flowers are pretty to see I do, or shall is say did, not like to see them in my grass.

Did you know that this so called weed has some amazing health benefits since it comes with some great nutrients?

There is no part of the plant that not can be used. The roots and leaves are however the most used as a herb.

Fact! Dandelion flowers are the most picked by kids to give to their mom!e

History of Dandelion

Dandelions have been used by many cultures including the native Americans who used it for several treatments like Kidneys, swelling, upset stomach and even heartburn.

The Chinese use it also for stomach problems and for inflammations.

In Europe is was used to reduce fever, help with diarrhea and if you had eye problems.

Roots and leaves of the dandelion

The roots and leaves of the dandelion contain a source of nutrients and here are a few of them.

  • Vitamins A,C,K and B
  • Zinc
  • Potasium
  • Iron
  • Calcium

The root is often used the most and can be used to make tea or just consumed as a whole while the leaves can be used in all type of salads.
The flower when it still is yellow can be eaten raw or cooked and is even used to make wine.

Health benefits of dandelion

Many cultures used the dandelion to detoxify and support a better liver function.

Woman health
Not proven by medical studies but by woman who used dandelion it help to support female health and improve hormone balance.
Also used as a herbal cure for UTI’s and other infections.

Nutritional
Since dandelion contains many minerals, vitamins and anti-oxidants it might help to support blood health and help the absorption of iron.

Balance your blood sugar
Although not much study have been done the University of Maryland wrote that in animal studies dandelion might help with regulating sugar levels and lower cholesterol. It raised the good HDL in the animals used for this studies.

Use if dandelion

Dandelion tea
Dandelion can be used in many ways since we can use all parts of the plant but I think the most used is for dandelion tea.
While you can use the dandelion from your backyard I suggest to be very careful if you use any type of chemical for weed or pest control. In that case I suggest to have a look at the dandelion I use personally.
Dandelion tea can be made from the root and from the leaves I have written a recipe on how to make dandelion tea her.

Salads
you can use the leave fresh in your salads. You can also substitute some other greens like kale in recipe for dandelion leaves.
